Have you had a Carport Approval DENIED by Sunshine Coast Council or a Building Assessor?

Dear, Sippy Downs and District Community Members,

We are calling on local community members who have either had issues with getting approval for a carport on their residential property whether or not any boundary relaxations have been sought.

We have recently been contacted by a local resident who has the number of concerns surrounding the Sunshine Coast councils management and application of the regional planning scheme as it they relates to approvals of carports for residential properties across the district as they have recently had their Carport Approval DENIED.

Following contact with Sunshine Coast Council today regarding carport approval processes we have a number of concerns surrounding what appears to be an extremely subjective manner in which council officers interpret “Visual amenity” and “Performance Outcomes” through the approval process especially relating to the relaxation of minimum boundary distances.

We have been informed that Council officers consider the following “Performance Outcomes” with seemingly complete autonomy “choosing” based on their individual interpretation to approve or deny applications devoid of a tangible and measurable decision making processes.

Performance Outcomes
Garages, carports and sheds:-
(a) preserve the amenity of adjacent land and dwelling houses;
(b) do not dominate the streetscape;
(c) maintain an adequate area suitable for landscapes adjacent to the road frontage; and
(d) maintain the visual continuity and pattern of buildings and landscape elements within the street.

In addition it would appear from what we have been told that even if all of your neighbours “Interpret” a carport addition is ok with them you can still have you Carport Approval DENIED as the council officers “interpretation” overrides that of the property owner and neighbours.

This is something the SDDCA finds disturbing and intends to explore to to the fullest extent possible and as such we are reaching out to you, District Locals to tell us of your experiences with council approval for a carport on your property.
