Councillor Dickson reassures residents that Bruce Highway upgrade will not negatively impact the Sippy Downs and future Palmview communities
Updated plans for the future upgrade of the Bruce Highway are supported by Sunshine Coast Council.
Division 6 Councillor Christian Dickson reassures residents that Council supports the current plans by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) for the future upgrade of the Bruce Highway between Caloundra Road and the Sunshine Motorway.
“DTMR has consulted with Council’s technical officers and undertaken extensive community engagement to provide a solution with the best safety outcomes,” Cr Dickson said “I echo the position of the Sippy Downs and District Community Association (SDDCA) and publicly validate their views that the Bruce Highway upgrade is good news for the Sippy Downs community.
“In recent years, the SDDCA supported by State Member for Kawana Jarrod Bleijie successfully fought to save the on/off ramps at Sippy Downs.
“The current plan retains these ramps and also caters for the projected 17,000 new residents of the Palmview Greenfield site.
“I have worked alongside the community and support the need for a connection to a western service road to service this new development.”
“There has been recent media attention regarding saving the Exit 190 ramps and I would like to clarify that any possibility to connect the Palmview development to Pignata Road (Bruce Highway underpass) could only be considered when the ramps were closed and the connection would be to the western service road,” Cr Dickson said.
This is ultimately a requirement of the State Government in terms of highway access locations and the need to improve safety in traffic merging environments.
“This connection would reduce the amount of traffic from Palmview using the local streets in Sippy Downs as it provides a more direct route to the Bruce Highway without having to go through lower speed residential areas and signalised intersections such as University Way and Sippy Downs Drive.
“Any assumption that Sippy Downs will be directly impacted by the closure of Exit 190 is not based on fact. “The Infrastructure Agreement for Palmview provides for the following trunk road connections to/from Palmview in the following order:
- Claymore Road
- Southern Road (2 lanes) to Caloundra Road/Racecourse Road intersection
- Springhill Drive/University Way/Sippy Downs Drive
- Duplication of Southern Road to Caloundra Road/Racecourse Road
- DTMR’s revised planning layout includes an indicative location for “possible future access to the western service road (Frizzo Road) subject to future upgrading of the Bruce Highway”.
Cr Dickson said he believed the current plan that includes the western service road is crucial.
“Under the current plan, construction of the western service road and the expansion to six lanes would not proceed if the ramps were to remain,” Cr Dickson said
“Many residents understand that the removal of the ramps provides safer vehicular movement onto the Bruce Highway and I strongly support any change that will improve safe travel for residents.
“I have played a key role in securing over $20 million dollars in local road upgrades from Dixon Road to Sippy Downs Drive and I am confident that future planned works around the entrance to Chancellor Park and University Way will only strengthen the safety and effective flow of traffic in the precinct.”
