As a component of the fire management program for the University of the Sunshine Coast, a small area within the Compensatory Habitat translocation site has been identified as requiring a prescribed burn.
Happening Wednesday, Aug 1 9.00am to 12.00pm
The burn will be undertaken by Officers from Rural Fire Service Queensland. During the burn access will be restricted.
We recently had the opportunity and pleasure to catch up with Des Cooper a local Sippy Downs resident who in August of 2013 set up the Village FM Radio Station at 80 years young. Now 85 Des is still going strong sharing his astounding music collection with the local and wider community.
We asked Des how all this came about and he shared with us, “It took me some 2 years to get all the music together and another 2 to get the licence sorted out”
“With my love of music and knowing a lot of people in my area are vision impaired – who can’t watch television or read papers – I thought I’d get a station started,” Des said.
“A lot of music gets lost and wasted, and it’s nice to bring it all back to life.”
So far Des has converted more than 7000+ songs from old records including 45’s, LP’s and 78’s and also, cassette tapes and videos into MP3s which he then plays on the air for listeners.
Des lives in the Bellflower retirement village here in Sippy Downs and operates Village FM from his home playing an eclectic mix of music for every taste with a full Programs & Schedule list available on his website.
“At breakfast time I love to play happy loving music for couples having breakfast and that sort of thing, for 9 till 12 I play a little bit more upbeat stuff and easy listening and then I do two hours of quieter stuff and that goes through early afternoon and then from midnight to about 4 am I do orchestral sleepy music, soft stuff which is nice.” Des Said.
But in amongst all that Des is introducing some 70’s and 80’s music as the demographics of the retirement village and wider community changes over time.
The station is licensed to transmit on the FM band frequency 87.6 MHz with an aerial power limited to an ERP of 1000 mW. Therefore the station services listeners within an estimated radius 2 kilometres from the approved transmitter site at the Des’s private residence, however with the online streaming service listeners can tune in from anywhere in Sippy Downs, Sunshine Coast or anywhere in the world.
Village FM may well be the only station in Australia, if not in the world, broadcasting 24 hours a day and streaming on the net, from a retirement village.
Village FM aims to provide a variety of musical entertainment of a genre palatable to the residents of the Bellflower and Hibiscus Retirement complexes and the wider Sippy Downs Community. Village FM also to relays messages to residents in regard to social, sporting or leisure activities being organised or conducted by the retirement village management, village residents’ association, community website news and information and also community updates and opportunities for action by the Sippy Downs & District Community Association.
Des has a limited opportunity for local businesses to submit paid advertising which helps Des keep the station running and equipment maintained and when need be replaced and upgraded so if you are a local business who may be interested please do contact Des via his website linked throughout this story.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads wishes to advise you of upcoming preliminary construction activities for the Bruce Highway Upgrade – Caloundra Road to Sunshine Motorway.
From 5.00am on Tuesday 18 April 2017
For the safety of motorists and construction workers, it will be necessary to remove on-street parking on a small section of Pignata Road as part of preliminary construction works. More detail of the ‘no parking zone’ is in the construction notice attached.
This will allow for construction to begin on a new car pool facility and work to occur on Pignata Road to provide safe access into and out of the facility.
Parking will be removed from the remainder of Pignata Road once the new car pool facility is opened to the public and construction work moves into these areas. Construction of the car pool facility is expected to take approximately six months to complete.
These no parking arrangements will remain in place until construction is completed in late 2020, weather permitting.
What else to expect:
Work in this area is expected to be undertaken
Monday to Friday, from 6am to 6pm.
As construction ramps up, the community should expect:
- Increased construction traffic: The number of construction and heavy vehicles will increase on Pignata Road. Please take care when travelling on this road.
- Audible noise: Audible noise from construction activities and heavy machinery can be expected.
Reversing beepers are a safety requirement and will be used at all times during work hours.
- Changed traffic conditions: Reduced speed
limits will be in place in this area. Traffic
controllers will also be present at times during working hours.

This amazing piece of artwork lovingly crafted onto the VW Bonnet pictured is made by Mieke Salna, a Sippy Downs, local mural/airbrush artist.
The image depicts the WWI landing in Gallipoli, Australians fighting in the jungle in Vietnam and on the right an Australian soldier from Afghanistan. The center the bonnet immortalises a WWI soldier and an Australian soldier from the Afghanistan conflict, with the modern soldier telling the old cobber “lets go home”.
This bonnet will soon make it’s reunion to the 1974 Volkswagon Beetle it came from which has been fully restored thanks to the initiative of Darroon Mathews. A lot of businesses have joined forces to help restore the Beetle for either a very reduced rate or sponsored parts. Darroon started this project with the beetle you see here above and will be very soon finished ready to be auctioned off. All proceeds will go to the Vietnam Veterans Association Maroochydore. Darroon Matthews approached Mieke to paint this artwork as she was recommended by Kuston Paints in Woombey after they had seen some of my work on a helmet that she had done last year.
The artwork has been painted with Createx, Whicked and illustration colours. A photographer is coming to make pictures of it tomorrow and when the Beetle is all done it will be on display in the showroon at Cricks in Maroochydore.
The project creators are still looking to find $3500 which they hope to achieve through gofundme, these details you can find on the facebook page dedicated to this cause at https://www.facebook.com/VWBeetleVietnamVets.
